CLOVIS, Calif. - Fresno State grabbed four medals on day one of the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis this week.
Fresno State's women are in first place after day one with 34 points. The Bulldogs grabbed medals in the women's hammer and javelin, taking second and third in both events.
How it Happened
Fresno State got to work early, going 2-3-5-7 in the hammer throw. Cierra Jackson took silver with a mark of 65.50m/214'10" on her second attempt. It held on for the furthest throw until Colorado State's Kajsa Borrman took gold on her fifth attempt. Emma Harper took third in the hammer with a toss of 57.23m/187'9", earning her first career Mountain West medal in the event.
Maria Lawson and Tearra Haney took fifth and seventh, respectively, in the hammer to earn points for the 'Dogs.
Haney earned her first career medal, taking third in the javelin with a throw of 45.27m/148'6" on her second attempt. Harriette Mortlock took silver in the javelin with a personal-best mark of 53.65m/170' on her final attempt. The junior twice hit a personal best on Thursday, first doing so on her third attempt before bettering her mark on her sixth try.
Through the morning and into the afternoon, the heptathletes saw a big day led by Ella Spaulding who sits atop the leaderboards after day one with 3,335 points. The sophomore took first in the high jump with a 1.66m/5'5.25" mark. She took second in the 200m dash, third in the 100m hurdles and fourth in shot put.
Madison Hutton, who took fourth in the heptathlon at last year's championship, is currently third with 3,192 points.
Garrett Ostrinski sits in fourth in the decathlon with 3,774 points. He started slow, but finished with three straight runner-up finishes in the shot put, high jump and 400m to crawl back to fourth place.
On to the finals
Jewel Ash advances to the finals in the 400m hurdles with a 59.54 time. She had the second-fastest time in the prelims. On the men's side in the event, Dane Koesterer also advanced with a time of 54.07.
Notable
For the third time in the last four years, Fresno State has had four women score in the hammer.
It is the third time since joining the Mountain West that the women have scored 20 or more points in the event.
It is the first time since joining the Mountain West that the Bulldogs have had two with podium finishes in javelin.
For the second straight year at the outdoor championships, Fresno State's women sit atop the team leaderboard.
