McCann and Wade announced in new roles

Head coach Jeff Tedford names Pat McCann offensive coordinator and Matt Wade quarterbacks coach.

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head coach Jeff Tedford announced changes to the football coaching staff on Tuesday, naming Pat McCann the Bulldogs' offensive coordinator and Matt Wade the team's quarterbacks coach. McCann will remain with the wide receivers, the position group that he coached in 2022.

McCann and Wade were both members of the 2022 staff that led the team to a Mountain West Championship, the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl victory over Washington State, and nine-straight wins to finish the season with a 10-4 record to become the first program in FBS history to begin its season 1-4 and finish with a 10-win season.

Tedford announced Brian Armstrong as the team's offensive line coach on Jan. 12. More on Armstrong can be found here.

Pat McCann - Offensive Coordinator/Wide Receivers

McCann served as Fresno State's wide receivers coach and pass game coordinator in 2022. The Bulldogs' offense was pass heavy a season ago, leading the Mountain West in total passing yards (3,788), pass completions (336) and pass completion percentage (71.04). Fresno State was second in the conference in total passing offense, passing yards per completion, pass attempts, passing yards per attempt, and passing touchdowns.

Fresno State averaged 270.6 yards through the air per game last season.

McCann coached a talented wide receiver room in his first year with the Bulldogs. Senior Jalen Moreno-Cropper became the first Bulldog since 2018 to have a 1,000-yard receiving season, finishing the year with 1,086 yards and five touchdowns. First year Bulldog Nikko Remigio, who transferred in as a graduate transfer from Cal, was second on the team in receiving yards with 852 on the year. Remigio had a team-high six receiving touchdowns last season.

Moreno-Cropper (first team) and Remigio (second team) were both All-Mountain West selections in 2022. McCann continued the trend at Fresno State in having at least two receivers selected as All-MW talent as the Bulldogs have had at least two in each year since 2020.

The wide receiver room had four different receivers with over 390 yards, and five players with multiple receiving scores on the year. Fresno State's offense featured three receivers with 50 or more receptions and four or more TD receptions.

When Tedford hired him in December of 2021, McCann was one of only two coaches on staff to not have a prior tie to Tedford or to Fresno State. McCann has prior offensive coordinator experience as he was the interim OC at Eastern Washington to close out the 2021 season. He also served as the offensive coordinator at Stonehill College from 2011-12.

Matt Wade - Quarterbacks

After one season as offensive quality control at Fresno State, Wade has been elevated to Fresno State's quarterbacks coach. As a quality control assistant in 2022, Wade worked closely with then-Bulldogs offensive coordinator Kirby Moore in assisting with the quarterbacks.

Wade has years of experience in coaching the quarterback rooms at previous stops including Southern Utah and Pacific University (Oregon). In his last stop at Southern Utah, Wade was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2020-21. Under his direction and leadership, the Thunderbirds offense saw all-american and all-conference talent in several offensive position groups. In his first season as offensive coordinator at SUU, his quarterback Justin Miller was named an FCS Sophomore All-American.
